Rider Bio:
Mara Abbott was born on the 14 November, 1985 in Boulder, Colorado. The 29-year-old grew up playing sports. Her athletic career began in the pool where she was a competitive swimmer at the Whitman College in Walla, Walla, Washington. At the same school Abbott picked up the bike as a form of cross training. While part of the Whitman Cycling Team, Abbott was a three-time Collegiate National Road Champion (2005-2007). She also won several titles as a Collegiate National Omnium Champion, Collegiate Natinal Criterium Champion and as a Collegiate National Team Time Trial and Team Omnium Champion. In 2006 and 2007, she added the U.S. U-23 National Time Trial Championship to her palmares. Since college, Abbott hasn’t looked back and continued to collect a mass of podiums.
Abbott turned pro in 2007 with the Webcor Builders team and has raced for World’s biggest pro teams over the past years including HTC-Highroad, Diadora-Pasta Zara, Exergy-Twenty16 and the UnitedHealthcare Team. In these years Abbott won a lot of races in the USA like the Tour of the Gila (4-times), the Cascade Cycling Classic and the race in San Dimas. Internationally she took two U.S. National Road Championships (2007, 2010), won two times the prestigious Giro Rosa (2010 & 2013) and has won six stages in the biggest Grand Tour in women’s cycling.
Off the bike, Abbott is an yoga instructor, practicing and teaching Vinyasa yoga and coaching her former swim team. Passionate about environmental sustainability, Abbott is working towards a degree in environmental economics and serves on the City of Boulder’s Environmental Advisory Board.
