Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling’s Laura Trott finished second overall in the Omnium competition at the World Cup in Aguascalientes, Mexico, to take the Silver Medal. Competing in the red, white and blue colours of Great Britain, the double Olympic and European champion began the second day of the the six-race event just three points behind reigning World champion Sarah Hammer of the United States, but victories for the American in both the Individual Pursuit and Scratch Race put her into an unassailable lead.
As the World record holder in the discipline, it was no surprise that Hammer won the Individual Pursuit, but third place for Trott, with a time of three minutes, 28.955 – less than three tenths slower than the American – was enough to give the Olympic champion third place, and keep her in touch with the leader.
Tenth place in the Scratch Race, however, a race that was also won by Hammer, pushed Trott down to third place, behind Belgium’s Jolien D’Hoore, with just the 500 metre time trial to come.
Second place in the two lap event, with a time of 35.007 seconds, lifted Trott above the Belgian rider into the silver medal position. Even a lowly ninth for Hammer was not enough to deny the World champion victory in the event, however.
Thanks to her victory in the Manchester World Cup Omnium, in November, Trott maintains her overall lead in the season-long competition.
